Photographs of the Angora Fire

The Angora Fire ignited the afternoon of Sunday, June 24th, 2007, on a very dry, extremely windy day – described as some of the most severe fire danger conditions experienced in the Tahoe Basin in the last 20 years.  In just three short hours, the fire had already spread four miles north from its starting point near Seneca Pond off North Upper Truckee Road.  By the time the blaze was fully contained in early July, 3072 acres had been left charred, and 254 homes were destroyed.  Property damage estimates put the cost at $160 million, with millions more in lost business to the town of South Lake Tahoe.   Fire officials later determined the blaze was caused by an illegal campfire left unattended on a blustery day.
